While at the University of Notre Dame, my design class was assigned a project regarding refugees in South Africa. The project, called Together+, aimed to use design to address issues of xenophobia in South Africa, and to help refugees adapt to the country.
Together+ consisted of several educational and promotional campaigns. I was assigned to the topic of healthcare. Together with classmates, I helped produce deliverables that included a medical rights poster series and an informative pamphlet teaching refugees simple medical terminology.
My class was fortunate enough to visit Johannesburg to user-test our work. While there, we were able to speak with refugees about their conditions and visit hospitals to refine our final solutions.
Posters
Our poster series, translated into South Africa's 11 national languages, quickly informs refugees of their basic medical rights, through usage of simplified language and instantly recognizable pictograms.
Pamphlet
In addition to the series of posters, we designed a set of pamphlets for patients. The pamphlets teach refugees simple medical terms in different languages so that they can communicate easily with doctors.
This video is a great overview of our travels and research in Johannesburg, South Africa. I’m the tall, goofy guy with glasses.
